Acoustics tailored to people and the environment

The living environment is being used more and more intensively, with increased mobility, more compact buildings and stricter standards. This means acoustics are not a luxury, but a necessity. Sweco helps clients tackle this issue proactively.

Our acoustic experts guide projects from the planning stage to delivery, providing substantiated advice, acoustic measurements and pragmatic solutions tailored to each scenario.  We combine technical expertise with a multidisciplinary approach, whether it concerns building acoustics, solid structures or lightweight wooden structures, new buildings or renovations, industrial noise or environmental acoustics. We help clients make properly considered choices, comply with regulations and guarantee acoustic comfort – for residents, users and the environment.

Acoustics is about more than just soundproofing

Our acoustic engineers understand that good acoustics create comfortable, safe and productive environments, ranging from homes, schools, hospitals, and office buildings to music academies, cultural centres and industrial sites. Acoustics goes further than soundproofing; we aim to create pleasant and functional living and working environments.

Acoustics are high on the agenda at Sweco. Our team of 14 experienced acoustic engineers is fully involved early on in the design stage. Thanks to our in-depth specialisation and collaboration within a multidisciplinary engineering firm, we guarantee an integrated, pragmatic approach that takes every architectural, technical and human factor into account. Our objective is for rooms to optimally perform their function, providing acoustic comfort for occupants, users and the environment.

A multidisciplinary and integral strategy: the perfect formula for cooperation

In our role as acoustic engineers we collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines on a daily basis, such as stability, engineering, façade construction, fire safety and energy, which allows us to maintain an overview of the project as a whole. As a result, we can:

  • Ensure the smart integration of acoustic requirements into the design
  • Avoid any conflicts between disciplines
  • Provide solutions that are feasible in terms of the technical aspects and budget
  • Adapt more quickly to legislation and standards

This enables us to make acoustics a driver of quality rather than an obstacle afterwards.

From sound insulation to noise control Our expertise covers the entire acoustic spectrum:

  • Building acoustics: air and impact sound insulation, façade insulation, noise from installations within the building, acoustic control measurements, renovations, high-rise buildings, CLT and timber construction
  • Room acoustics: reverberation, speech intelligibility, 3D modelling
  • Environmental or ambient acoustics: sound measurements, sound modelling in relation to traffic or industrial activities, EIA studies, urban planning integration, Vlarem II, sound propagation from installations in the environment
  • Industrial acoustics: noise control, vibrations, optimisation of the work environment
  • Urban acoustics: 3D sound simulations, quality of life, quiet zones

We use advanced software (IMMI, Odeon, AcouBAT, INSUL, etc.) and the latest measuring equipment for testing, commissioning and certification (including Vlarem, BREEAM, GRO, WELL and VIPA).

Lightweight (wooden) constructions, renovations and sustainable material use

At Sweco, we are passionate about developing acoustic solutions that are perfectly compatible with the latest trends in the construction industry. Good acoustics are essential in any building, and our specialisation allows us to ensure that sound is integrated in a natural and aesthetic way, especially when it comes to sustainable building trends.

Wooden structures not only provide an ecologically responsible alternative, they also contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our experience in acoustics ensures that these lightweight structures, from traditional timber construction to CLT structures, offer optimal sound insulation through the correct acoustic analysis of the various nodes that shape the structure.

We are at your service in renovation projects, to offer acoustic advice that takes into account the existing structure and the specific challenges involved in renovating historic or older buildings. We use innovative techniques and materials to improve acoustics, while preserving the charm of the original design.

Sweco is committed to the sustainable use of materials. We also try and propose acoustic solutions consisting of environmentally friendly and renewable materials, without compromising on acoustic comfort.

Realistic, innovative and independent

At Sweco, we attach great importance to feasibility and independent advice. We do not focus on theoretical optimums, but on applicable solutions that genuinely improve acoustic comfort within the limits of each project. Our engineers stay up to date through standards committees, training courses and real site experience. This enables us to provide substantiated advice on:

  • The right construction details
  • Cost-efficient solutions without compromising on performance
  • Measures that comply with all applicable standards per region

Our advice is not tied to any suppliers or products but is guided exclusively by the interests of the project.

Acoustics as a key factor in user quality

Acoustics influence how people feel in a building. It determines whether a classroom is quiet, whether a concert hall sounds warm, whether a hospital is conducive to rest. Our acoustic experts ensure the technical performance of a building translates into a tangible difference for its users. Our involvement in all stages of the project, from feasibility to delivery and audit, guarantees the impact of acoustics on the quality of life a building offers in addition to its functionality.
