Sweco Belgium’s Role in AZ Sint-Maarten Hospital Project
Sweco Belgium is responsible for the study, design and implementation of the stability, external infrastructure and architectural design, as well as the study of the parking building for the AZ Sint-Maarten hospital project. This significant project aims to combine three existing campuses into one modern, regional hospital.
AZ Sint-Maarten’s new hospital construction timeline
AZ Sint-Maarten is merging its three current campuses, Rooienberg campus in Duffel, and the Leopoldstraat and Zwartzustersvest campuses in Mechelen, into one new hospital. The construction of this brand new, regional hospital commenced in October 2013, near the R6-Liersesesteenweg in Mechelen-Noord. The construction work is expected to continue until 2018, with the building becoming operational in the same year.
New hospital facilities and services at AZ Sint-Maarten
The new hospital will feature 654 hospital beds and 96 places in the day hospital, along with facility areas that include meeting and conference rooms, medical-technical logistics services, laboratories, an operating area, pharmacy, policlinic, and administrative and facilities services.
As from late 2018, patients can go there for:
- observation and treatment by the various medical disciplines
- a spacious policlinic
- a rehabilitation centre
- highly specialised medical-technical services such as radiotherapy and MRI.
Assignment
In the AZ Sint-Maarten project Sweco is responsible for:
- stability: design up to and including monitoring of the execution;
- external infrastructure: earth moving, environment, roads, sewers, utilities;
- total design of the parking building;
- site monitoring and supervision of the client during all stages of the construction process.
BIM, new form of cooperation
Sweco is responsible for the stability study and design of the external infrastructure of this new hospital building. Right from the design phase, we work to this end in a coordinated BIM (Building Information Management) environment. With BIM, the essential data of a construction project is saved in a central database, controlled and managed via 3D models.
We work in a ‘construction team’ formula in conjunction with other designers via this BIM-platform. The key figures (owner, architect, engineers) are involved right from the start of the project concept.
Collaboration in a construction team
During the construction process, all parties work with the same current information and are kept informed of each other’s decisions. This ensures a significant reduction in failure costs during implementation, allows proper budget follow-up and monitoring, and allows us to monitor the site more efficiently.
The newly built AZ Sint-Maarten is the first major project in Belgium where BIM is being applied. Furthermore, Sweco provides support to the client in developing the technical financial plan, funding (VIPA), construction supervision, … The project includes the following work and installations subsidized by VIPA: carcass structure and finishing, structural elements, electrical systems’ external infrastructure, data & communications, electromechanical equipment, elevators, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, security system, hospital techniques, fixed and loose furniture as well as medical equipment.
