Sweco has set up an ISO 50001 energy management system for its own operation, integrated with the ISO 14001 environmental management system.
We thus have first-hand experience of the difficulties and concerns during implementation as well as during the operational phase. Sweco was by the way, the first Belgian consultancy and engineering company to receive a formal certification of this energy management system.
ISO 50001 is the international standard for energy management systems. This standard specifically focuses on reducing the energy consumption of an organization on the basis of a detailed understanding of the energy consumption and the use thereof.
In addition, Sweco has obtained the renewal of its ISO 9001 and SHE certificates, as well as the extension of the OHSAS 18001 safety certificate. The ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 certificates have been awarded for all Sweco’s activities. SHE applies to the Industry division and ISO 50001 is valid for energy consultancy and management of Sweco offices.
Making the difference
Sustainability begins with yourself. Sweco gives the right example by limiting the environmental and energy impact in its own offices. A strict separation of waste, limiting paper consumption, sound monitoring and reduction of CO2 emissions… these are all small contributions that make up the difference.
Sweco is making the biggest difference in its projects. That’s where you’ll find our knowledge, passion and most important contribution to the sustainable future that we strive for. The project work is an integral part of the environmental and energy management system. It is our ambition to surpass the competition in our projects in the field of environment and energy. The identification and satisfaction of all regulatory requirements is the starting point. Followed by a critical assessment of the environmental and energy impact and where possible, alternatives are put forward and discussed with our clients. This way, together with our customers, we want to continuously improve our sustainable designs and recommendations.
Sweco wants to stay ahead with its knowledge and application of innovative concepts and new developments, with strong project operation as a result. We are therefore investing considerable time and resources in training and know-how exchange for our employees, because with joined forces we become the most sustainable.
For the extension of the existing ISO structures for environment and energy, an intense internal cooperation was established between the project leaders, the experts from the environment and energy department and staff services (including quality, safety, facilities, communications and HR). This has resulted in Sweco optimally integrating its various management systems. This way we ensure a uniform approach to the overlapping elements such as document management, and at the same time we make space for our experts to create maximum added value.
