Three years ago the <\/span>Vesdre<\/span> and the <\/span>Ourthe<\/span> valleys were hit by floodings <\/span>severely <\/span>affecting multiple <\/span>Walloon <\/span>c<\/span>ommunes. <\/span>To become more prepared and resilient after the devastation, the <\/span>Service Public de <\/span>Wallonie<\/span> (<\/span>SPW<\/span>)<\/span> initiated<\/span> a series of hydrological and urbanistic studies in which <\/span>Sweco\u2019s<\/span> brought its <\/span>expertise<\/span> towards a sustainable transition.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rethink<\/span>ing<\/span> public spaces<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The SPW selected our experts to guide and support the affected municipalities of Verviers, Trooz, Rendeux, and Laroche-en-Ardennes with urban and hydrologic strategic support under a framework contract. The aim is to increase resilience by mitigating future floods through demineralization and integrated water management<\/a> strategies. Our goal is to create a living environment that is not only safe and sustainable but also enjoyable to live in, all while strengthening the territory’s resilience through enhanced water management<\/a> and climate change adaptation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We adopted a strategic approach and utilized concrete operational and strategic tools tailored to the specific needs of each commune. Additionally, we partnered with Idea consult to identify financial levers and key partners per strategic actions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>diagnosis to o<\/span>perational sketches<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Working collaboratively, our teams at Sweco combined their expertise in urban planning, ecology, landscape, infrastructure, and hydrology to create resilient cities<\/a>. Our projects began with a comprehensive diagnosis, encompassing various aspects such as the blue and green network, mobility, urban conditions, heritage, and human factors. This thematic diagnosis allowed us to gain a holistic understanding of the systemic challenges at different scales.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second part of the project, we presented <\/span>a strategic and operational trajectory <\/span>that provided a comprehensive overview of the existing situation<\/span> and the action to be taken<\/span>. Th<\/span>is<\/span> roadmap <\/span>included<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n
