In the heart of the bustling Antwerp harbor, the Beverentunnel is undergoing a much-needed renovation. This ambitious pilot project sets a challenging deadline of just six months per tunnel tube, from start to completion and commissioning. Sweco is supporting AWV (the Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic) with technical coordination of the detailed design and intensive site management.<\/strong><\/p>\nphoto of the entrance of Beverentunnel with a crane and construction workers\n

The Beverentunnel, with its tunnel tubes of 1070 meters long and two lanes plus an emergency lane, serves as a lifeline for traffic, accommodating a capacity of 1500 vehicles per hour or 4.75 million vehicles per year. Ensuring a safe flow of traffic is therefore of utmost importance.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Safety as a priority<\/h2>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The total renovation of the Beverentunnel encompasses both structural improvements and the modernization of tunnel technologies. The road surface is being completely renewed, with extra attention given to a wider emergency lane. Additionally, tunnel technologies are being upgraded to enhance visibility and safety. LED lighting is being integrated, and the fire-resistant cladding and fire extinguishing systems are being renewed. The ventilation system and escape route are being adapted to comply with current standards.<\/p>\n

Comprehensive tests ensure the quality and functionality of the tunnel systems. This includes testing hypothetical scenarios, which we hope will never occur in reality.<\/p>\n

Innovation for Sustainability<\/h2>\n

The total renovation of the Beverentunnel goes beyond structural and technical improvements. Sustainability is at the core of the project. An advanced water purification system ensures that the pumped groundwater, which keeps the tunnel dry, is purified and discharged according to strict Flemish discharge standards. In addition, a solar park is being installed in a green area on the slope of the tunnel. With 750 solar panels, this park will supply half of the tunnel’s energy needs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Optimized Phasing to Minimize Disruption<\/h2>\n

To minimize disruption to the environment and traffic, the renovation of the Beverentunnel is being carefully phased. This thoughtful approach ensures that the impact of the works is kept to a minimum, both before and during the renovation.<\/p>\n

With the renovated Beverentunnel, AWV takes a significant step towards a safe and sustainable infrastructure.
