Flemish ministers Annick De Ridder, Ben Weyts, and Cieltje Van Achter have kicked off the redesign of the traffic complex R0 x A201. Sweco, as part of the THV MoVeR0, prepared the initial note and developed the conceptual proposal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the next 40 months, contractor group SPI.R0, commissioned by De Werkvennootschap, will transform the current turbine junction\u2014which provides access to the national airport and Evere\u2014into a compact, signal-controlled on- and off-ramp complex. The work is expected to be completed in the spring of 2028.<\/p>\n

This will make traffic flow smoother and safer, while also adding more greenery and buffer capacity for water management<\/a>. The Ring around Brussels will remain fully open during these works, although traffic on the A201 will be temporarily redirected via the surrounding turbine bridges.<\/p>\n

Untangling the Traffic Junction in Zaventem<\/h2>\n

At the national airport in Zaventem, Leopold III Avenue intersects with the Ring around Brussels (R0). The design of this so-called ‘turbine junction’ leads to numerous issues on the Ring and in the surrounding area. This traffic junction is not safe and contributes to daily traffic jams on the Ring. Moreover, the current flyovers are in poor condition, and the distances between the turbine junction and other interchanges on the E19 and Henneaulaan are too short.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sweco has prepared the initial note and the conceptual proposal for this project as part of the THV MoVeR0. This proposal was discussed during dialogues and used for the DBFM specifications and the assessment of Dialogue and Offer Products. We also supported De Werkvennootschap during the preferred bidder phase by reviewing technical documents and the environmental permit<\/a> application.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Conflict-Free Traffic Complex: Single Point Interchange<\/h2>\n

A new traffic complex is being introduced to facilitate smoother and safer traffic flow at this point along the Ring around Brussels. The key lies in a compact on- and off-ramp complex in the form of a unique Single Point Interchange.<\/p>\n

Minister of Mobility and Public Works Annick De Ridder stated: \u201cIn this unique intersection solution, the on- and off-ramps of the inner and outer ring converge at one point. Smart traffic lights manage the various traffic flows completely conflict-free in three phases. Thanks to this compact solution, there will be more space for traffic wanting to merge onto the R0 at the interchange with the E19 on one side and H. Henneaulaan on the other. Additionally, space around the project area will be freed up for a park-like environment that accommodates both people and wildlife, allowing the Woluwe to flow above ground once again.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Improving Access to Brussels and the National Airport<\/h2>\n

Not only will traffic on the Ring around Brussels flow more smoothly thanks to the redesign of the traffic interchange. Minister for Brussels Cieltje Van Achter said: \u201cAccess to our capital, as well as the accessibility of the national airport, business parks, the NATO site, and the new headquarters of Defense will improve and become significantly more pleasant and safer thanks to the redevelopment of Leopold III Avenue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Working Together<\/h2>\n

Sweco and Arcadis are collaborating within the THV MoVeR0 with De Werkvennootschap on the redesign of the Ring around Brussels, between the Groot-Bijgaarden and Sint-Stevens-Woluwe interchanges. The project team is responsible for traffic studies, technical and architectural designs (roads, structures, and other infrastructure), the landscape integration of the project, process guidance, preparation of permits and tender documents, and support in stakeholder management<\/a> and communication. The following parties are working as subcontractors: ZJA, Frank Van Hulle, Cluster, and Mint.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
