With the Cyclostrade E411, Wallonia gains an important new cycling connection. This vital link from Brussels to the Walloon region will connect to the F204 bicycle highway. Sweco is the designer of the first section between Wavre and Louvain-la-Neuve. Our consultants are also overseeing the execution of the works, with full completion scheduled for June 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

For ten kilometers, cyclists will enjoy a separated roadway that allows for two-way traffic. The cyclostrade crosses several major traffic arteries, passes through a shopping street, the city center of Wavre, and connects to existing traffic hubs. These conditions create some complex requirements, leading us to execute the project in three phases, with each completed segment being immediately put into use. The first part is already in use, while phase two is in full swing and phase three has just started.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

From cycling at new heights<\/h2>\n

Unlike the relatively flat Flemish landscape, a cyclostrade in Walloon Brabant traverses a more varied terrain. The route includes several bridges and a tunnel.<\/p>\n

The first bridge spans 315.9 meters, crossing above forests, the Dyle, and Boulevard de l\u2019Europe in Wavre. The second bridge spans 110 meters, passing over a railway and the N239. These impressive structures have an average span of 20 meters between support points.<\/p>\n

Both bridges are made of metal, with metal railings inclined ten degrees outward. The roadway has a gradient of two degrees to facilitate easy drainage of rainwater.<\/p>\n

To cycling in the embankment<\/h2>\n

On the ground level, the four-meter-wide cyclostrade runs largely within existing slopes, where five-meter embankments have been excavated. This requires significant adjustments to the slopes, such as reprofiling from 10\/4 to 6\/4. In total, 40,000 m\u00b3 of soil has been excavated and reused on-site. Various support structures along the route prevent erosion, which naturally occurs on steeper slopes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Safety above all<\/h2>\n

One of the key connections for the cyclostrade is the N4. From there, cyclists can connect to various shops via existing roundabouts. Since cyclists re-enter general traffic here, our designers have re-evaluated the existing roundabouts. A redesign of the roundabouts ensures a safe combined traffic flow.<\/p>\n

Although Wallonia has less of a tradition of bicycle highways<\/a> compared to the flatter Flanders, SPW Mobilit\u00e9 Infrastructures has launched a significant catch-up movement. Sweco is pleased to contribute to the shift towards gentler traffic flows, which, with a multimodal approach, supports sustainable mobility<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
