However, a purely remediation-driven approach will no longer deliver today\u2019s and tomorrow\u2019s objectives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Certain contaminants are widespread or partly naturally occurring<br \/>\n(such as some heavy metals).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>societal cost<\/strong> of making all soil completely \u201cclean\u201d is not always proportionate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That is why Sweco advocates a <strong>broader approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/good-soil\/\">soil quality<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>managing risks while maximising soil functions at the same time;<\/li>\n<li>defining clear priorities: where intervention is unavoidable and where it can be phased;<\/li>\n<li>exploiting circularity: not automatically treating contaminated soil as waste, but examining whether concentrating, delineating or changing its use delivers better outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This approach generates tangible benefits: better-substantiated trade-offs and a clearer narrative for permitting authorities and stakeholders.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"block cb block--white\" >\n\t<div class=\"block__inner cb__inner cb__inner--one\">\n\t<div class=\"col--12 col--center col--wrapper\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col col--6 editor-content\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<figure><i class=\"icon icon-quote\"><\/i><\/figure>\n<p>That is why Sweco does not believe in isolated soil trajectories. Commissioned by the Ministry of the Brussels-Capital Region, Sweco \u2013 together with Michel Pauwels and OMGEVING \u2013 starts from in-depth soil studies. We map the soil structure, bearing capacity and infiltration capacity in detail in order to align the ecological redesign, planting strategy, rejuvenation of the tree population and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/climate-resilience-nature\/\">water management<\/a> precisely with the subsoil. This allows us to sustainably combine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/eco-consultancy-and-biodiversity\/\">biodiversity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/climate-resilience-nature\/\">climate adaptation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/climate-resilience-nature\/\">water management<\/a>, sports and recreational functions, and circular material choices. It sits at the intersection of<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/digitalisation\/geospatial-data\/\">spatial planning<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/liveable-cities\/\">urban design<\/a>;<br \/>\nwater and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/climate-resilience-nature\/\">climate adaptation<\/a>;<br \/>\ninfrastructure and mobility;<br \/>\nnature development and ecosystem services;<br \/>\nhealth, regulation and public support.<\/p>\n<p>That is why Sweco does not believe in isolated soil trajectories. <strong>The best cost\u2013benefit balance is achieved when soil helps determine, from the very first concept, which scenarios are feasible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Integrated decisions also require a multidisciplinary approach: we bring together soil specialists with water experts, urban planners, mobility planners, ecologists and permitting specialists.
