It has therefore provided the framework for water policy in Flanders for more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p>A key principle is that <strong>a water body is only considered to be in good status when all relevant criteria meet the required standard<\/strong>. This makes the regulatory framework strict, but also logical from an ecological perspective: a water system only functions properly when chemistry, hydromorphology and biology are in balance.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"what-does-this-mean-for-you-as-a-client\">What does this mean for you as a client?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Water quality is becoming an increasingly decisive factor in permits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/news\/from-planning-to-operation-a-full-lifecycle-approach-with-sweco\/\">project planning<\/a> and design choices<\/strong>.<br \/>\nA project must not lead to any deterioration in the status of a water body. In recent decades, considerable progress has been made thanks to investment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/industrial-water-solutions\/\">wastewater treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The next step is more difficult<\/strong>: as overall water quality improves, remaining sources of pollution can have a relatively greater impact. This is important for water quality, but also for <strong>drought resilience, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/climate-resilience-nature\/\">flood management<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/eco-consultancy-and-biodiversity\/\">biodiversity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/expertise\/climate-resilience-nature\/\">climate adaptation<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, system restoration is complex. Space in Flanders is limited.<br \/>\nThere are also several legitimate interests that need to be reconciled: nature, agriculture, housing, industry, infrastructure, recreation and flood protection.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, ecological objectives can sometimes conflict with one another.
