Kordia (a partnership between Beerse, Vosselaar, Turnhout, Kasterlee, Lille and Oud-Turnhout) is working on a future-oriented spatial and mobility policy<\/a>. Sweco was responsible for the renewal of the intermunicipal mobility plan, in which the municipalities link their ambitious vision on mobility to an innovative approach for the action plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n \t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Focus on modal shift<\/h2>\n

The mobility plan consists of a couple specific mobility goals for the urban region. The most important one is to double the travels on foot, by bike and public transport<\/a>. To do so a clear future vision and a roadmap was drawn up, where new networks for cycling, public transport<\/a>, car and freight traffic were developed to realise these objectives, coupled with clear design requirements for each street.<\/p>\n

The connection with spatial planning<\/a> policy was also essential; the networks now form the basis for the land-use policy of the municipalities. An innovative approach was also applied: important cycling and public transport<\/a> routes served as the backbone of spatial planning<\/a> within the action plan, whereby the focus will be on these routes in the coming years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Local mobility solutions<\/h2>\n

In addition to the overarching approach, specific local issues in the various municipalities were addressed. Our experts, for example, developed a traffic circulation plan for the city centre of Turnhout to keep through traffic out. In Beerse, we created a vision for reinforcing the town centre, refined the location policy for offices and drew up an initial plan for a bicycle highway. In Vosselaar, we created a local mobility vision to reduce through traffic, and in Oud-Turnhout we supervised the redevelopment for through traffic in the village centre.<\/p>\n

The strength of collaboration in Kordia is that each topic is approached from an urban regional perspective. After all, the mobility network, the residential region and the economic fabric do not stop at the municipal borders.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

The Kordia mobility plan is unique in Flanders. Intensive cooperation between the municipalities creates a supported and ambitious vision for the future and ensures that supralocal cycling routes are realised quickly.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Targeted participation process<\/h2>\n

We are ensuring that the new mobility plan meets the wishes and needs of the inhabitants through the active participation of the municipal councillors and the involvement of advisory boards and civil society organisations. Workshops and information sessions were held at key moments in the process to allow all stakeholders to be involved in the thinking and decision-making process.<\/p>\n

Through these joint efforts, we are striving for a liveable and easily accessible urban region in Turnhout and the surrounding area, where mobility and space go hand in hand.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
