Such dewatering can locally result in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a drop in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> levels;<\/li>\n<li>settlement affecting existing infrastructure;<\/li>\n<li>drying out of green areas, parks and gardens;<\/li>\n<li>potential impacts on foundations and wells in the surrounding area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"block fwmb\" >\n\t<div class=\"block__inner editor-content fwmb__inner fwmb__inner--right fwmb__inner--image\">\n\n        <div class=\"fwmb__media col col-12\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1680\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/05\/antwerpen-oosterweel-rightbank-kt-section-26_day-1680x560.jpg\" class=\"attachment-fwmb-image size-fwmb-image\" alt=\"render of a cross-section of Oosterweel, showing a traffic tunnel underwater.\" \/>\t\t<\/div>\n\n        \n        \n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"block cb block--white\" >\n\t<div class=\"block__inner cb__inner cb__inner--one\">\n\t<div class=\"col--12 col--center col--wrapper\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col col--6 editor-content\">\n\t\t\t<h2>Integrated approach: from measurement to on-site adjustment<\/h2>\n<p>To understand and manage impacts on the water system, Sweco contributed to an <strong>integrated approach<\/strong> covering all phases of the project:<\/p>\n<h4>Study phase: mapping the groundwater system<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Within the Antwerp project area, an extensive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> monitoring network<\/strong> comprising more than 200 dataloggers and telemetric divers has been deployed. Based on these measurements, and taking seasonal fluctuations into account, the reference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> situation was mapped in detail.<br \/>\nThese data provided the basis for a comprehensive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> model<\/strong>, used to test scenarios and mitigation measures.<\/p>\n<h4>Design: mitigation measures<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Diaphragm walls extend down into impermeable subsoil layers. They slow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> flow and limit inflow into the excavation pits.<br \/>\nThe design also accounts for potential long-term upstream effects, such as higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> levels. These effects are assessed using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> model.<\/p>\n<h4>Execution: real-time monitoring and level-controlled dewatering<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">The 200 dataloggers transmit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/digitalisation\/data-management\/\">real-time data<\/a><\/strong>, enabling level-controlled dewatering. As a <strong>water-saving measure<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/groundwater-solutions\/\">groundwater<\/a> levels are not lowered more than strictly necessary.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/digitalisation\/data-management\/\">real-time data<\/a> are reported periodically to advisory bodies and support adjustments where required.<\/p>\n<h4>Construction phase: water quality<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">The quality of the <strong>effluent from dewatering operations<\/strong> is continuously monitored.<br \/>\nBefore discharge, it is treated in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swecobelgium.be\/en\/services\/industrial-water-solutions\/\">wastewater treatment<\/a> installation<\/strong>: only treated water is released into the environment.<\/p>\n<p>This results in a <strong>chain-based approach<\/strong>: from reference measurements, through modelling and the design of measures, to monitoring and adjustment during construction and operation.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"block block--white columns\" >\n\t<div class=\"block__inner story does not end after construction. The sunken ring and tunnels require <strong>limited permanent collection<\/strong> of leakage flows (seepage) to keep the infrastructure dry and safe.
