Welcome to Industry

At Sweco Belgium we build our industrial services around Plant Life Cycle Services (MOC), multidisciplinary EPCm projects and Asset Information Management.  Our specialists manage your projects within time and budget, from its first concept through basic and detailed engineering and construction management resulting in a safe, effective and resource-efficient production facility.

INTEGRATED PROJECT TEAM DELIVERS SUCCESS

Cargill, Ghent

The Cargill Ghent Multi-seed plant was originally built as a soy crush plant in 1980. In 2007, the rapeseed capability, together with the semi refinery and biodiesel plant, were added. We replaced the plant’s current Extractor and Dryer-Cooler, as these machines needed urgent replacement. They were at the end of their lifetime resulting in non-reliable performance with a high rate of scheduled and emergency shutdown time. We have set up a site-based integrated project team in which Cargill, contractors and our experts worked together as one team chasing the same project objectives. Throughout  intensive coordination, good communication, close project follow up and fast interaction, we have managed to deliver a successful project within budget and time.

BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST

Vynova, Tessenderlo

For Vynova in Tessenderlo, a leading European PVC and chlor-alkali company, we replaced the existing distillation column by a new one. With its length of 32 metres, diameter of 4 metres and weight of 67 tonnes, it’s one of the largest high-boil columns on site! The installation of the column was a part of the yearly shut-down, during which inspections and maintenance were carried out, to improve the sustainability of the production processes.

TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FOOD TRANSITION

Enough, Sas van Gent

We designed the new greenfield mycoprotein plant for food-tech company Enough in Sas van Gent. This first in its kind zero-waste production plant will produce 10,000 tonnes of mycoproteins/year in a first phase. Mycoproteins are a high quality protein source.  Switching from 1 million tonnes of animal sources to those proteins is equivalent to replacing 5 million cows, or 1.2 billions chickens, reducing more than 6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The project consisted of workspaces, a tank park, a Cleaning-In-Place installation and a production facility including reactors, refrigeration rooms, cooling towers and packaging area. We were responsible for the full EPCm scope: Detailed Design, Procurement of the technical installations, Construction Management, Commissioning and Start-up assistance.

NEW PRODUCTION UNIT FOR DIMERS

Oleon, Ertvelde

Dimers are molecules obtained from sunflower oil. Oleon’s unit in Ertvelde produces those raw materials for greener cosmetics and vehicle paint. Throughout the engineering, we executed a greenfield and brownfield project. We first took care of the update of the existing layout plan and then started the detail engineering for civil, steel, piping and stress. We first updated the basic layout and then delivered a very detailed and accurate piping design, because there was limited space available. We drew 380 pipes and 26 devices for the main building, which has five floors. We designed these pipes with the utmost care in terms of stress technology.

Nuclear Power Plant, Doel

Nuclear power plants contribute to electricity security in multiple ways by keeping power grids stable and complementing decarbonisation strategies since, to a certain extent, they can adjust their output to accompany demand and supply shifts. As the share of variable renewables like wind and solar photovoltaics rises, the need for such services will increase. The Doel Nuclear Power Station is one of two nuclear power plants in Belgium. The plant represents about 15% of Belgium’s total electricity production capacity and 30% of the total electricity generation. To make sure we can count on reliable and safe energy, our experts were responsible for the inspection of the power station’s cooling towers. The purpose was to make sure that the constructions were still reliable regarding stability and firmness.

A GROUND-BREAKING RECYCLING PLANT FOR PLASTICS

Indaver, Antwerp

The amount of plastic that is produced in the world has increased from 2 million tons in 1950 to over 390 million tons in 2021, and is expected to further increase to about 1480 million tons by 2050. To control the plastic soup and minimize our impact on the environment, we have to find sustainable recycling solutions for plastics waste. Years of research and development at Indaver resulted in a depolymerisation process in which plastics are recycled right down to the molecular level in their Plastics2Chemicals facility. This demo plant will recycle approximately 65,000 tonnes of end-of-life plastics.  At Sweco, we made the concept design of the facility. Today, we’re working on the Detailed Engineering for piping, civil works, process equipment, electrical installations, instrumentation and fire safety. Additionally, we are responsible for the entire BIM model and the 3D coordination between the different stakeholders involved in the project. We are also managing the planning and doing the overall project management. Finally, we are assisting Indaver during the purchasing process and the implementation of the works.

DESIGNING PIPES WITH THE UTMOST CARE

Trinseo, Terneuzen

Trinseo is a global manufacturer of plastics and latex binders. In the past, they were part of the Dow Chemical Company. At their plant in Terneuzen, Trinseo replaced their heat exchanger. This equipment is 15 metres heigh, has a diameter of 2 metres and weighing 75 tonnes. It has a design temperature of 825°C and a design pressure of 3,5barg. The large pipe diameters (18” – DN450) at high temperature (15 bar steam) were a key point of attention. The complex design was crucially important here. We at Sweco designed these pipes with the utmost care in terms of stress technology.

YEAR-ON-YEAR EFFORTS IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Vynova, Tessenderlo

Vynova is a leading European PVC and chlor-alkali company. Their products play a key role in manufacturing numerous industrial products and consumer goods. We made an energy study and performed measurement campaigns for their electrolysis’ cooling water system (primary pumps of 500 kW). With this study, the PVC manufacturer underpins its year-on-year efforts in the field of energy efficiency. Based on the electrical, hydraulic and thermal measurement campaigns and analyses we carried out throughout this energy study, our specialists identified significant technical, and economically feasible savings.

GOING CIRCULAR

ArcelorMittal, Ghent

The circular economy gets of the starting blocks. Also in the industry, where materials from can be reused for manufacturing. Arcelor Mittal built a loading installation, so that waste from their metallurgical process could be easily shipped. Those waste materials, like sand and silt, will be used as feedstock to make concrete at another production site. We were involved in all the phases of the project, i.e. concept (layout), basic- and detailed study, acceptance tests, follow-up erection and commissioning of the mechanical, electrical and the spray water installation.
