Fluxys: Turning business impacts into biodiversity gains
Sweco’s latest Urban Insight report emphasizes the importance of biodiversity and offers practical advice for businesses on how to address it. A key step towards more sustainable biodiversity management is understanding your company’s impacts and dependencies on local ecosystems and flora and fauna in general. Fluxys is committed to promoting biodiversity across all its sites. With the support of our ecologists, the energy infrastructure company is taking concrete steps to strengthen sustainability and enhance the ecological value of its locations.
From screening to action
Sweco screens the biodiversity of both large compressor stations and smaller sites in Flanders and Wallonia. These locations – ranging from 60 to 200 hectares – already offer strong potential through open spaces, grasslands, hedges, and water basins. Such natural features allow animal species to settle or use the sites as stepping stones between habitats. Based on the screenings, Sweco provides tailored advice and guidelines for implementing effective measures.
Monitoring for long-term impact
After the measures are introduced, we carry out annual monitoring to assess their effectiveness. This ensures that biodiversity efforts are not only well-implemented but also adjusted where necessary. By tracking results, Fluxys gains reliable insights into which measures work best and can make well-informed decisions on scaling up to other sites.
Creating value beyond compliance
Through this collaboration, Fluxys benefits from professional ecological advice, practical implementation guidelines, and continuous follow-up. The project delivers value far beyond compliance: it strengthens local ecosystems, contributes to sustainability goals, and positions Fluxys as a frontrunner in integrating biodiversity into energy infrastructure.

How to measure your impact and dependencies
