Transport & mobility

Infrastructure and mobility form the backbone of our society. A properly functioning transport system is the key to efficient travel, economic growth and a higher quality of life. Given that transport still causes a quarter of current emissions we are, at the same time, facing the challenge of making these systems future-proof and sustainable.

Improving mobility and traffic safety with smart, sustainable solutions

Sweco can offer government or business a gamechanger that will make it possible to take mobility and road safety to the next level. Our multidisciplinary teams can provide integrated solutions by which a smart location policy reduces the number of required journeys. Thanks to a high-quality range of accompanying measures, we are encouraging a modal shift to sustainable modes of transport and are also committed to the electrification of mobility, while implementing charging infrastructure and strengthening the distribution network.

Mobility that improves our quality of life requires a safe and robust road network

Sweco’s mission is to improve mobility, health and quality of life in cities, towns and villages. In doing so we design inclusive and iconic public spaces, which enhance people’s experience and are tailored to active mobility. Multimodal hubs, smart traffic organisation, future-oriented parking solutions and shared mobility enable us to create the right balance between urban accessibility and improvements to people’s quality of life.

A safe and efficient road infrastructure is crucial for a properly functioning transport system. Our traffic specialists design and implement solutions that enhance road safety and our broad expertise with cycling networks means we can help local and regional authorities to develop high-performance and safe cycling infrastructure, which is backed up by an appropriate cycling policy.

We also use monitoring and traffic modelling to develop measures which increase the robustness of the road network, thereby enabling us to use existing infrastructure more efficiently and increase network reliability. One of the ways this can be achieved is through the use of intelligent transport systems (ITS), such as dynamic traffic management.

High-performance public transport

A balanced modal split is only feasible if there are quality public transport networks in place which make our mobility as a whole more sustainable and robust. Multimodal hubs facilitate efficient transfers and interlinking with road and cycling networks, while public transport stations are expanding to become multifunctional and attractive gateways to our cities. Sweco plans and designs local and regional public transport systems, such as light rail, metro and high-quality tram and bus connections.

Smart logistical solutions

Our economy needs efficient logistics transport. Freight transport by water is one of the most environmentally friendly options that exists and it helps relieve the burden on our road network. We are building the water infrastructure of the future in the form of canals, rivers, ports and multimodal hubs. In doing so, we are not only focusing on capacity, water safety and availability, we are also seizing opportunities to enhance biodiversity, landscape, ecology and recreation. In the context of modernising and expanding airports, Sweco can also advise you on emission-free urban distribution (Sustainable Urban Logistics Planning or SULP) and we are also actively exploring the future of drone transport.

Future-proof infrastructure as a form of leverage

At Sweco we have a long-term vision. By placing the emphasis on the judicious use of materials, life-cycle costs and carbon emissions we are able to design roads, bridges, viaducts and tunnels which have a long operating life and require minimal maintenance. We are also committed to using circular building materials wherever possible and to climate-adaptive design. Exhaustive greening and landscape integration creates opportunities on many levels. For example, the removal of impermeable surfaces and the use of permeable materials, green verges and buffers help reduce the risk of flooding. Interventions like these help increase biodiversity and make our infrastructure more resistant to heatwaves.

An integrated environmental and renovation approach

Our environmental experts evaluate the impact on people and the environment in parallel to the infrastructure design, so that we can then immediately refine it. A thorough Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of a project makes it easier to acquire the necessary project permits and everyone benefits as a result. We can provide road management organisations which are planning to renovate ageing infrastructure with support in terms of cultural heritage management and by evaluating the quality of existing infrastructure and then implementing renovation programmes. We also use extensive Building Information Modelling (BIM) applications to optimise the design, engineering, implementation and management of complex infrastructures.

Having Sweco at the helm of your infrastructure project will enable you to change up a gear. Together, we can design a sustainable and efficient transport system for future generations. You will then be ready to tackle tomorrow’s mobility challenges with confidence.
