Sweco supports NMBS-SNCB with site supervision and quality control on station projects
Under a new framework agreement, NMBS-SNCB is engaging Sweco to provide supervision and quality control for infrastructure works, construction works in station buildings and various technical installations. The assignment comprises three geographical lots, covering station projects throughout Belgium.
NMBS-SNCB is upgrading its stations to improve the passenger experience and prepare its infrastructure and station buildings for an expanding rail service. The framework agreement gives the railway company the flexibility to bring in additional capacity and specialist expertise for individual projects. It runs for five years, with each call-off assignment covering the actual construction period of the site concerned.
“This framework agreement provides a strong foundation for supporting NMBS-SNCB with our multidisciplinary expertise. Through close collaboration and careful monitoring, we can respond flexibly to the needs of a wide range of station projects.”
Erwin Malcorps, Business Area President, Sweco bv/srl

NMBS-SNCB invests in multimodal stations
As Belgium’s national railway company, NMBS-SNCB is responsible for welcoming passengers and managing, maintaining and upgrading its stations. These are increasingly becoming accessible, comfortable and multimodal hubs, offering seamless connections between trains, bicycles, cars and other modes of transport.
An integrated approach to site supervision
Sweco’s experts will inspect buildings and technical structures and prepare the associated technical documentation. They will monitor progress and safety, maintaining a continuous presence during critical, exceptional or high-risk activities. For works in the immediate vicinity of railway tracks, they will take specific safety and training requirements into account.
Sweco will also coordinate the parties involved and document site arrangements. The teams will check technical quality, from contractors’ drawings to materials and workmanship, and manage financial and administrative follow-up, paying particular attention to changes and construction schedules.
Monitoring station works
Sweco will monitor each assigned site from the start of construction through to handover. We will inspect the completed works, check as-built documentation and operation and maintenance manuals, assess the required acceptance tests and verify the final account. This will provide NMBS-SNCB with a substantiated assessment of the quality delivered and any issues requiring attention for each call-off assignment.
