Water

Water is life, the source of all growth. Clean water and water security are indispensable, yet these crucial resources are coming under ever-increasing pressure due to economic growth, urbanisation and climate change. Water is also a natural force that can cause untold damage. Sweco believes we can work together to address these complex challenges by applying integrated and innovative solutions.

Working together on a resilient water system for the future

Cooperation between companies, governments, knowledge institutions and consultants is essential for a successful transition to a future-proof water system. Water knows no boundaries; it transcends sectors and applications. Sweco therefore takes a holistic, integrated approach to the water system to ensure continuity, quality and ecological balance. Our experts assist stakeholders throughout the entire process in order to achieve high-quality, sustainable results. Our expertise ranges from wadis in residential areas and retention basins to industrial data generation, water treatment, green-blue strategies and coastal protection.

Circular water network

Only 3% of the world’s water supply is potable; 68% is contained in ice and glaciers, while one third is groundwater. This means that water is a scarce and finite resource. Sweco wants to use water responsibly and restrict losses to an absolute minimum. Our experts optimise the entire water chain and every step of the process from water extraction and treatment, to distribution and use. We maximise reuse, including wastewater valorisation and raw material recovery. Clean water is a crucial aspect of the circular chain. Our consultants can assist you with restoring streams and rivers, eliminating pollutants, even micro pollutants, and separating stormwater and wastewater.

Space for water

The widespread use of concrete and other sealed surfaces prevents water from infiltrating the soil. Every year we hear reports of how the groundwater table is falling. This is no coincidence. Ingenious runoff and collection systems, however, make it possible to create sustainable water resources and use them effectively. Sweco promotes robust, long-term solutions that facilitate both climate resilience and integrated water resources management.

Resilience and flood management

Water can also pose a threat in the form of rising sea levels, extreme precipitation and floods. Grey infrastructure, such as sewers, embankments or retaining walls are effective, well-documented engineering solutions to these problems. New insights, however, are leading us back to nature. Our experts use nature-based solutions to harness the power of natural elements and processes. This approach results in flexible and resilient solutions that protect the living environment.

Our projects

Our water experts stand ready to offer you guidance, support your policies, and help bring about innovative solutions. They work in an interdisciplinary manner with our urban planners, architects and ecologists to build sustainable, climate-robust water systems.

We are all working towards a sustainable future where water remains a wellspring of life and growth.
