Water modelling: an indispensable link in sustainable drainage
Climate change has a major impact on flooding. Flanders suffers from increasingly frequent and more intense summer storms. Wallonia is also at risk due to the many reservoirs near residential areas and agricultural land. Sweco assists governments, municipalities, and companies with effective drainage systems based on strongly supported water models.
Compared to the 1950s, Flanders experiences almost twice as many summer storms with heavy precipitation. By 2050, an increase by almost a factor of 3 is predicted. In Wallonia, each of the 15 sub-basins was affected by at least one flood recognised as a natural disaster between 2017 and 2023. Since 1993, every municipality has experienced at least one flood. The 2021 water disaster is still top of mind for all of us.
From hydrodynamic model to proactive solution
Your challenge is in good hands with our multidisciplinary team of spatial planners, engineers, ecologists, environmentalists, and energy experts. They design and analyse hydrodynamic models for entire drainage systems:
- Sewer systems
- Drainage via canals, watercourses, and open channels
- From a single street to extensive networks across multiple municipalities
- Source measures: buffer basins, infiltration basins, wadis, and others
You will be guided through the entire process using an integrated approach.
- Simulations: based on statistical fictitious rainstorms and monitored rainfall series for effective and forecast data
- Analyses: the simulated hydraulic behaviour of various drainage systems provides essential insights
- Bottleneck analyses: detailed analyses detect risks of flooding or overflows
- Designs: sustainable solutions such as optimising pumping infrastructure and better utilisation of storage capacities
- Implementation and follow-up: concrete projects that effectively combat current problems and proactively prevent future challenges
