Antwerp City Hall: Intelligent fire safety for a 16th-century landmark
Antwerp City Hall is far more than a historic building. It is a 16th-century landmark, an iconic feature of the Grote Markt and the city’s active administrative heart. To ensure the building remains functional and relevant today, a comprehensive renovation was required. At the heart of this project lay one key challenge: how do you integrate contemporary fire safety into a building that was designed centuries before modern fire safety standards existed?

The challenge
Historic buildings require a fundamentally different approach from new developments. At Antwerp City Hall, fire safety had to be enhanced without compromising the building’s character, heritage value or functionality. Combining architectural grandeur, fragile heritage features and a public function, every technical intervention had to be carefully considered and sensitively integrated.
Our approach
Sweco investigated how modern fire safety principles could be seamlessly integrated into the existing structure of the City Hall. The study identified key vulnerabilities and translated them into technical solutions that respected the context of a protected heritage building. The approach focused on three priorities: identifying fire risks, improving smoke and heat extraction in the central open space, and further enhancing the safety of escape routes.
Rather than treating fire safety as a standalone technical layer, it was embedded within the overall renovation strategy. This resulted in a solution that is both highly functional and architecturally respectful. The discreet integration of the smoke curtain and the mechanical smoke extraction openings demonstrates how technical systems can remain virtually invisible while playing a vital role in safeguarding heritage buildings.
Result
The project demonstrates how a historic landmark can be prepared for contemporary use without compromising its identity. The renovation brings Antwerp City Hall into the 21st century with solutions that enhance safety while preserving the building’s outstanding heritage value.
City Hall is not a museum. It is the beating heart of our city and the home of every resident of Antwerp. A 500-year-old Renaissance palace that continues to fulfil its original purpose to this very day.
