A future-proof healthcare complex designed to grow

AZ Delta Campus Rumbeke

In Oekene-Rumbeke, a new healthcare campus has been built, playing a major role in the Roeselare region. This modern hospital offers high-quality acute care, an efficient organisation and the flexibility to expand or adapt its operations in the future.

A new era for healthcare in the region

The campus largely replaces the former city hospital and now offers a spacious, technologically advanced healthcare environment. With a main building of 105,000 m², complemented by a logistics building and an energy plant adding another 15,000 m², the campus provides 700 beds and a wide range of specialised services.

The site includes, among other things:

    • three radiotherapy bunkers
    • seventeen operating theatres
    • robotic technology for neurosurgery
    • an extensive radiology offering, including interventional techniques

These facilities enable the hospital to carry out complex care programmes in a modern and efficient setting.

A thoughtful layout based on care clusters

During the design phase, Sweco’s architects worked with the hospital to develop an organisational model based on nine pathology clusters. This approach groups care processes into six “pools”, where consultations, day hospitals and care units for a specific condition are located together.

All care functions are distributed across seven floors within a compact footprint of 34,000 m². Their location is intentionally selected:

    • consultation areas on the urban-facing side
    • care units, intensive care and day clinics facing the quieter green landscape

This results in a logical and pleasant environment, both internally and externally, for patients and staff.

Clear circulation for an optimal visitor experience

A key design principle was the separation of logistical flows and visitor routes. On each floor, a central spine provides clear and intuitive wayfinding. Along these main axes, patios bring in generous natural daylight and offer calming views. These open spaces enhance the sense of comfort throughout the large healthcare complex.

    Space ready for future developments

The building is designed on a structural grid and mainly uses façade-bearing elements. This allows future changes to be made without major interventions. Thanks to the thoughtful placement of windows, every space benefits from natural light. The façade panels can also be replaced when expansion is required—an important advantage in a sector that is constantly evolving.

    An inviting entrance

Visitors enter the site through a landscaped access zone that connects the hospital to the parking area. This landscape element integrates:

    • a planted ramp
    • stairs and pedestrian pathways
    • access to the bicycle parking
    • an escalator for added comfort

At the top, a spacious public square connects directly to public transport.

For the outdoor design, 100,000 m³ of excavated soil was reused. Native trees and large water retention zones ensure a climate-resilient and natural integration into the surrounding landscape.
