
Brussels-Energy enhances fire safety of energy facilities with an integrated sprinkler solution
Brussels-Energy produces energy from non-recyclable household waste and comparable waste streams. The facility is an essential part of the waste and energy infrastructure of the Brussels-Capital Region and processes large volumes of waste every day through three incineration lines, each with a capacity of 19 tonnes per hour.
Due to the combination of industrial processes, high thermal loads and complex technical installations, fire safety is critical within energy facilities of this kind. To further strengthen the existing site in terms of safety and compliance, Brussels-Energy invested in a new integrated sprinkler solution.
Sweco supported the project from analysis and preliminary design through to technical development, hydraulic calculations and support during the tendering and implementation phases.

An integrated approach to fire safety for industrial energy facilities
Within industrial energy facilities such as waste-to-energy plants, fire safety risks are particularly complex. Different process areas, technical installations, storage areas and operational activities require an integrated approach in which safety, operational continuity and regulatory requirements are closely aligned.
Sweco started the project with a comprehensive analysis of the existing installations on the site, including:
- the existing sprinkler systems
- the pump room
- technical infrastructure
- available as-built documentation
- operational process areas
Based on this analysis, a preliminary design was developed that took into account:
- the operational requirements of Brussels-Energy
- applicable legislation and regulations
- the requirements of fire insurers
- the specific risks associated with industrial process environments
- office, storage and processing areas

From technical design to hydraulic calculations
Following the initial analysis, Sweco further developed the complete technical design of the new sprinkler system.
This included:
- hydraulic calculations
- technical sizing
- layout drawings
- P&ID diagrams
- ISO drawings
- technical specifications
- supply specifications
- bills of quantities
During the design process, particular attention was paid to:
- testing and commissioning requirements
- operational continuity
- maintenance accessibility
- insurance requirements
- client-specific requirements
By combining technical expertise with practical engineering, Sweco developed a solution that is both high-performing and future-ready within a complex industrial environment.

Support during tendering and implementation
In addition to the design work, Sweco also supported Brussels-Energy throughout the tendering process. Technical questions from bidders were analysed and answered, while the different tenders were evaluated from a technical perspective.
In collaboration with Brussels-Energy and the stakeholders involved, site visits were organised and technical analyses were carried out to identify the most suitable solution for the site.
This integrated approach ensured efficient collaboration between all parties involved throughout the design, tendering and implementation preparation phases.
