An intergenerational garden at the heart of the care site
Madeleine
The Madeleine project involves the construction of a residential care centre with a shared, intergenerational garden. The development forms part of a broader care- and community-oriented programme that also integrates a nursery and a rehabilitation centre (Cothan). By creating the garden and meeting areas, the project establishes an open and inclusive environment that enhances social interaction and quality of life.

Connected with the neighbourhood
Located close to the city centre, the site has been associated with healthcare facilities for decades. The decision to redevelop it into a residential care centre and a day and short-stay centre reinforces the community-focused character of the area. The outdated building was replaced by a contemporary infrastructure designed with a strong emphasis on meeting spaces and accessibility.
A human-scale landscape design
The entrance to the building is marked by a landscaped forecourt, featuring green areas and a monumental staircase with integrated planting. Wheelchair-accessible ramps and rest areas with benches ensure ease of use for all. Around the central rotunda of the residential care centre, the garden unfolds in a semicircle, offering drop-off zones, a green reception square, playful pathways and terraces at various levels.

Balancing activities and relaxation
The garden design alternates between active and tranquil zones. A playground, pétanque court and shared vegetable gardens encourage activity and social interaction. In contrast, lawns, a water feature and quiet corners invite relaxation and reflection. The diversity of plants, colours and seasonal highlights stimulates the senses and ensures the garden remains appealing throughout the year.
Accessibility and experiencing nature
The project fully complies with current accessibility standards for people with reduced mobility. Gentle slopes, anti-slip surfaces and strategically placed seating provide comfortable circulation. The selection of trees, shrubs and perennials was made with diversity, colour and seasonal variation in mind. The garden thus creates an environment that stimulates people physically, mentally and socially, in close connection with nature.
Collaboration and execution
The realisation of Madeleine is the result of a multidisciplinary collaboration. Assar architects acted as architect, landscape architect and interior designer. Construction and outdoor works were carried out by DHERTE and WANTY. SETESCO handled structural studies, while DTS was responsible for fluid and special techniques.
