Redevelopment of Kasteelstraat in Bornem with safe traffic flow and rainwater infiltration
Commissioned by the municipality of Bornem, Sweco contributed to the redevelopment of Kasteelstraat, an important access road to AZ Rivierenland’s Bornem campus. Our design takes maximum account of traffic safety, accessibility and water management.

Safer traffic around the hospital and childcare centre
The Kasteelstraat is not an ordinary residential street. It is an important link for access to AZ Rivierenland, Kabouterland childcare centre and Kasteel Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde. The main challenge was the parking pressure and the need for smooth access for parents, emergency patients, ambulances and deliveries. Sweco translated this complex traffic situation into a clear and safe design, with more space for pedestrians, more logical circulation and targeted parking solutions.

Road design with extra parking spaces, drop-off zone and turning point
The design focuses on what the street needs to do every day: bring patients quickly to the emergency department, guide children safely to Kabouterland and allow all road users to circulate smoothly. Extra parking spaces for the emergency department were created along the hospital side, with a drop-off zone near the entrance. A new footpath makes the route to the childcare centre safer and more comfortable. Near Kasteeldreef, a compact turning point allows cars to turn more easily without disrupting traffic flow.

Sewerage and water management for a climate-resilient street
The Kasteelstraat was also upgraded below ground. The existing stormwater sewer was renewed and connected to the surrounding ditches. Permeable paving, depaving and well-considered drainage give rainwater more space to infiltrate and drain away more slowly. As a result, the redevelopment also contributes to a more resilient public space during heavy rainfall.
Improved accessibility for AZ Rivierenland
Because the works took place close to a hospital and childcare centre, accessibility was just as important as design quality. Sweco took these critical functions into account throughout the phasing. By smartly combining mobility, water management and spatial quality, the renewed Kasteelstraat now better supports the daily operation of this healthcare environment. For the neighbourhood, this mainly means more calm and fewer conflicts between traffic, parking and vulnerable road users.
