Renewal and Redevelopment
After more than seventy years of loyal service, the original SHAPE buildings are due for renewal. The Belgian Ministry of Defense has selected B2Ai architects, ANMA (Paris), and Sweco to design the new NATO military headquarters in Casteau.
The project involves the redevelopment of the 150,000 m² military site. The new headquarters will house, among other things, the central NATO command center for military operations and the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA). After more than ten years of planning, including the development of the master plan and the integration of complex program and security aspects, the project has now received final approval.

Construction and Investment
The construction project consists of several components:
- For SHAPE: the construction of an administrative complex of approximately 132,000 m², divided into two main buildings:
- the “Core Business Building”
- the “Admin Building,” complemented by annexes of 7,500 m².
- For NCIA: the construction of a unique building of 25,000 m²
Future-oriented Design
The new design will contribute to the modernization of SHAPE and improve NATO’s operational efficiency. The existing buildings will be demolished once the new headquarters is completed. Sweco’s multidisciplinary approach and commitment to sustainability play a key role in this extensive and strategically important project.
