Spatial Policy Plan Tremelo
The Spatial Policy Plan focuses on preserving and strengthening the rural and green identity of the municipality of Tremelo. BUUR part of Sweco developed a future-proof spatial policy with a strategic focus on sustainable development. For the participation process, we collaborated with n.o.n.k.e.l.
Six Spatial Development Strategies
The Spatial Policy Plan is based on Tremelo’s identity and aims to preserve and enhance the rural and green character of the municipality. It formulates six general spatial development strategies to achieve this goal:
- Protecting and connecting open spaces.
- Growth tailored to Tremelo through the development of strong cores.
- A differentiated future perspective for residential areas outside the cores and residential parks.
- Improving public space quality, focusing on sustainable mobility.
- Creating space for climate adaptation.
- Respecting and strengthening spatial identity.
Two Policy Frameworks
To translate the vision for future spatial policy into concrete actions, two policy frameworks have been developed: Core Strengthening and Open Space. These frameworks analyze current trends and spatial structures and include specific strategies and actions to achieve the objectives.
- Open Space
This framework addresses the pressure on open space and advocates for an integrated and multifunctional approach. Green-blue corridors, such as the valleys of Vrouwvliet and Laak, are further developed to enhance water management and biodiversity.
- Core Strengthening
This framework focuses on preserving Tremelo’s rural and green character by encouraging growth in the right places, with an emphasis on quality. The cores of Tremelo and Baal are strengthened while the surrounding open spaces are protected and cherished.
Participation and Co-Creation
An important aspect of the project is the involvement of the local community. For this, we relied on the expertise of n.o.n.k.e.l. During accessible and engaging participatory sessions, residents were encouraged to explore their vision for space. This co-creative process contributed to broad support and a shared vision.
Future Vision
The Spatial Policy Plan lays the foundation for Tremelo’s spatial policy in the coming years. With a focus on sustainability, climate adaptation, and diverse housing options, Tremelo is taking steps toward a future where both nature and the community thrive.
