Functional and flexible learning environment in a green setting
Classroom Building Sint-Janscollege
Sint-Janscollege in Sint-Amandsberg (Ghent) has a new classroom building as part of the large-scale redevelopment of the school site. Where once an unused plot lay, there now stands a modern, future-oriented educational environment that accommodates 390 students and staff members. The building houses classrooms, practical training rooms, sanitary facilities, administrative areas, and a school restaurant.

A courtyard as a meeting place
By strategically positioning the building along the northern boundary of the site, a three-sided enclosed schoolyard is created: a central courtyard that serves as a meeting space for the entire school. The formerly paved playground has been softened with functional and decorative greenery, making the outdoor space more pleasant and healthy.
The building was deliberately not connected to the existing infrastructure. This choice reinforces the independence of the courtyard and makes it a fully-fledged gathering space. Despite the enclosed nature of the school grounds, the building’s striking architecture ensures visibility and recognition from the street.
Daylight and orientation
The learning spaces are north-facing, benefiting from generous, soft daylight without the need for sunshading. The southeast façade accommodates the circulation areas and is fitted with vertical concrete sunshading elements that are both functional and visually defining. These concrete structures contribute to the building’s distinctive architectural language and reduce heat gain.

Flexibility for the future
The classroom building consists of a concrete frame with columns and beams, fitted with lightweight partition walls. This layout makes it easy to adapt the interior to future needs, such as changing class sizes or new educational functions. The site layout also anticipates possible future extensions.
Preserving and enhancing greenery
The school site has long been known for its green character. The design intentionally preserved and enhanced this identity. The new central courtyard was landscaped with adapted planting and now forms the heart of the school where students gather.
Playful architectural reference
A special detail is the playful reference to books in a bookcase, visible in the arrangement of the exposed concrete panels. This subtle nod connects the building’s function to its architectural expression, making it a recognisable landmark for the school community.
