design drawing of battery park Green Turtle

Green Turtle, one of Europe’s largest battery parks

The Green Turtle battery park in the industrial site of Rotem (Dilsen-Stokkem) is underway. Soon, 385,000 families will be able to enjoy green power when the wind is not blowing or the sun is not shining as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) allow us to better harness the potential of renewable energy. Storage is at least as important as electricity production because it makes our energy system flexible.

Green Turtle, along with other battery parks, is contributing to the energy transition. We store surplus wind or solar power when it is available and feed the green power back into the grid during peak times. This allows us to make more efficient use of renewable energy and avoid shutting down wind turbines or large-scale solar panel parks to relieve the burden on the grid.

The battery storage will also provide more stability on the electricity grid and a better balance between energy supply and demand. The ultimate result is also a reduction in power prices.
With this project, our energy experts, together with Tesla and GIGA Storage Belgium, are taking a concrete step in the green transition in Belgium and Europe.

With the integrated design of this battery park, we are laying the foundations today for a resilient and sustainable energy system. Together with our partners, we are committed to the energy transition to ensure that Belgium and Europe are stronger, cleaner and ready for the future.

Green energy storage of 2,800 MWh

Green Turtle has an output of 700 megawatts, which translates into a storage capacity of as much as 2,800 megawatt hours. When coming online, this is likely to make it the largest battery park in continental Europe, potentially supplying up to 385,000 households with green power.

Sweco was responsible for the project’s permit application, which was successfully approved, thanks to our extensive experience with BESS projects over the past few years. Furthermore, Sweco supported EPC contractor Tesla with the engineering of the complete facility, a multidisciplinary challenge that Sweco was eager to tackle.

From early stage development to detailed engineering

Green Turtle does not only represent an important step forward in green energy storage, but also highlights our project and engineering services for innovative energy solutions.

Our energy experts and engineers supported GIGA Storage Belgium in early stage development including

  • An integrated basic design and successful permit application
  • Schedule development and capital cost estimating
  • Risk management, optimisations and scenario analyses
  • HSE in Design services, including a Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) study and PGS checks.

We subsequently followed through with a detailed multidisciplinary engineering package for Tesla covering the complete facility.

  • Full engineering of the Balance of Plant (BoP) across high, medium and low voltage systems, as well as the civil and infrastructural site development.
  • BIM-driven integrated design resulting in coordinated, clash-free construction documentation across disciplines and design packs

Moreover, our Ecologists supported the project with ecological research, landscape integration studies and helped moving protected fauna that nestled on the industrial site these last years. Discover the solutions that reconcile local biodiversity with this high-technological energy project.

As experts, we remain committed to the green transition in Belgium and Europe, where Battery Energy Storage Systems play a key role in a sustainable, robust and balanced electricity network. Looking to the future, we look forward to contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy system with our partners.
