Green Turtle: one of Europe’s largest battery parks takes shape
The design of the Green Turtle battery park in the industrial site of Rotem (Dilsen-Stokkem) is underway. Soon, 385,000 families will be able to enjoy green power when the wind is not blowing or the sun is not shining as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) allow us to better harness the potential of renewable energy. Storage is at least as important as electricity production because it makes our energy system flexible.

Important link in energy transition
Green Turtle, along with other battery parks, is contributing to the energy transition. We store surplus wind or solar power when it is available and feed the green power back into the grid during peak times. This allows us to make more efficient use of renewable energy and avoid shutting down wind turbines or large-scale solar panel parks to relieve the burden on the grid. The battery storage will also provide more stability on the electricity grid and a better balance between energy supply and demand. The ultimate result is also a reduction in power prices. With this project, our energy experts, together with Stadsbader Contractors and GIGA Storage Belgium, are taking a concrete step in the green transition in Belgium and Europe.

Green energy storage of 2,800 MWh
Green Turtle has an output of 700 megawatts, which translates into a storage capacity of as much as 2,800 megawatt hours. This is likely to make it the largest battery park in continental Europe. With that capacity, 385,000 households could soon be supplied with green power. The Temporary Partnership, which includes Stadsbader Contractors, is responsible for the entire process, from design to acceptance (EPC), as well as the Balance of Plant (BoP). Sweco was selected for the engineering and design of the battery park. Owing to our experience with other battery parks, such as those in Ostend and Zeebrugge, we can offer extensive expertise.
From design and BIM model to risk analysis
Our energy experts and engineers create an integrated design, including a detailed schedule for the execution phase and a quotation. GIGA Storage Belgium can count on smart technical and process optimisations during the engineering phase as well as execution. Furthermore, we develop a structural, civil and electrical BIM 3D model and conduct a Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) study. That study ensures that we systematically identify and control potential hazards or process disturbances. GIGA Storage Belgium also receives a risk file listing all possible risks and the management measures required for them. We also design the office buildings and take care of all studies, documentation and permits. Finally, we provide transparent support for design choices. Construction of the battery park is scheduled for the summer of 2025.
