Vioneo’s journey to a fossil-free plastics industry
In the heart of Antwerp, a groundbreaking initiative is taking shape: chemical company Vioneo, founded by A.P. Moller Holding is laying the groundwork for a fossil-free plastics production facility. It does this with the support of Sweco’s engineering and consulting expertise.
Set to be operational by 2028, this innovative plant will produce approximately 300,000 tonnes of fossil-free plastics annually, slashing CO2 emissions by a staggering 1.5 million tonnes each year.
By pioneering the low-carbon production of polypropylene (PP) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) using green methanol, this project demonstrates the tangible impact of the green transition, positioning Europe as a leader in defossilising the global plastics industry.
Hans Van der Heyden, Team Manager License to Operate: “Wow, what a day it was when Vioneo unveiled its project in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. And we are very excited to bring our permitting expertise to this game- changing project!”
