Open Construction Site Day: Visit the Aquafin NETwork Site on 31 May
On Sunday 31 May, during Open Construction Site Day, the municipality of Herent, Aquafin, Sweco and contractor Viabuild will open the doors of a unique NETwork construction site in Veltem‑Beisem. The project includes the installation of a separated sewer system and the redevelopment of the village centre. Together, we show how complex infrastructure works can go hand in hand with safety, clear communication and respect for the local environment.
This exemplary project puts transparency, tidiness and neighbourhood involvement at its core. As engineering consultancy, Sweco is responsible for the hydraulic study and the technical design, while safeguarding the coherence between water management, mobility and public space. By smartly combining underground sewer works with a high-quality redesign of the public realm, we help build a village that is liveable, safe and future-proof.

A construction site focused on openness and engagement
As a NETwork construction site, this project strongly emphasises clear communication, safety and neighbourhood friendliness. During Open Construction Site Day, visitors gain a unique insight into how a complex Aquafin site is organised, and how disruption is consciously kept to a minimum through smart site layout and continuous coordination between all partners.
Added value for the village, water systems and quality of life
The Veltem‑Beisem project goes beyond essential sewer works. By intelligently combining underground infrastructure with above-ground redevelopment, a high-quality village centre is created with more room for social interaction, green spaces and active mobility. Low-traffic streets, wider cycle paths and sustainable green areas ensure a safer and more pleasant environment for residents and visitors.
Significant progress is also made in water management. Thanks to the separated sewer system and the use of wadi systems, rainwater is collected and infiltrated locally. This makes the village centre more resilient to climate change while simultaneously enhancing quality of life.
