Sint-Anna Cycle Bridge: Antwerp-Waasland Connection Now Complete
On 1 July 2025, project developer Lantis and Minister for Mobility and Public Works Annick De Ridder officially opened the new cycle bridge over the R1 at the Sint-Anna junction. The bridge is part of the F41 cycle highway and provides a safe connection between Waasland and Antwerp. With a width of 10 metres, there is ample space for both cyclists and pedestrians.
This cycle bridge is the result of strong collaboration between various partners. Sweco was responsible for the technical development, while ZJA designed the architectural concept. Together with client Lantis, the City of Antwerp, the ring park designers of Team West (including Omgeving and De Urbanisten), and the contractor consortium Rinkoniên, we realised a forward-looking solution that smartly integrates mobility, ecology, and quality of life.

Connection to the Ring Cycle Path and Urban Network
The bridge connects to the Ring Cycle Path (FR10) and Charles de Costerlaan, ensuring smooth access to the city and surrounding neighbourhoods. This link is an important step in developing a full-fledged and safe cycling network on the Left Bank.
The cycle route along Charles de Costerlaan has been completely redesigned. The old access road to the Konijnenpijp has been replaced by a wide axis for cyclists and pedestrians. The cycle path has been widened to 6 metres to accommodate the expected increase in bicycle traffic. The route runs parallel to the E34 towards the Kluifrotonde.
Duo with Ecoduct: Space for People and Nature
The cycle bridge forms a twin structure with the adjacent ecoduct, which connects the Vlietbos and the Rot at Middenvijver. At both ends, two short cycle bridges provide a grade-separated crossing between fauna and cyclists, literally giving nature more room to move. To support both the ecological connection and the modal shift, the motorway embankments have been raised. The slope is steep on the motorway side and gently sloping on the park side.

Collaboration for Maximum Quality of Life
This project was developed as part of the overpass studies led by the intendant. Team West (Omgeving and De Urbanisten) worked on a design that enhances liveability on the Left Bank. They built on the original plans, which were refined by THV ATLAS, including Sweco, Witteveen+Bos, and ZJA.
