This energy study is part of Vynova’s EPA commitment (Energy Policy Agreement), within which the company makes year-on-year efforts in the field of energy efficiency.
The depth of the study considered illustrates the efforts energy-intensive companies are making today in order to continue to achieve additional efficiency gains after a long process of energy efficiency programmes.
The electrolysis department’s cooling water system is an energy-intensive component of the site (primary pumps of 500 kW). Based on the electrical, hydraulic and thermal measurement campaigns and analyses carried out throughout this energy study, a significant technical and economically feasible savings potential has been identified. The savings measures mainly focus on (dynamic) cooling water flow and pressure reduction, optimisation of pump efficiencies and speed control of cooling tower fans.
Sustainable savings:
- The study has resulted in the identification of a range of cost-efficient energy savings measures of significant potential.
- Compared to renewable energy, these energy-efficient measures have the advantage that they lead to lower costs for the end user and a decrease in the total system cost: a reduction in the load on the electricity grid, no intermittent character, higher cost efficiency.
- In addition to the optimisations in the initial scope, additional insights and improvement proposals have been reached throughout this study that create opportunities for further steps in the field of energy efficiency.
- The identified savings measures are a practical example of the substantial contribution that energy efficiency should make according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in achieving the climate objectives:

Sweco’s employees had a very broad knowledge of the subject matter. It was great to see how they carried out the assignment with passion for the profession. The approach to the assignment was well put together. A structure and methodology that was clear to everyone and worked well. Cross-mission initiatives/ideas were also given for other interesting projects. That out-of-the-box mindset is worth its weight in gold. The reporting and delivery of documentation was well taken care of. We can easily build on this, even after a few years. Our thanks for this collaboration.
