How digitalisation is reshaping the future of Sweco

Digitalisation is at the core of Sweco’s mission to deliver smarter, more sustainable solutions in engineering, architecture, and consultancy. As the industry transforms at high speed, Sweco is taking a leading role-embedding advanced digital tools and methodologies to improve quality, efficiency, and collaboration across projects.

Leading the change

Driving this transformation is Luka Obuljen, Chief Digital Officer at Sweco Belgium. With a clear vision, he is leading the company’s long-term shift toward data-driven, technology-enabled ways of working.

It’s not just about introducing new tools, it’s about transforming our processes to be more efficient, raising the quality of what we deliver, and creating more value for our clients.

AI as a catalyst for innovation

Among the most impactful technologies is artificial intelligence (AI). Already integrated across multiple teams, AI supports automation, enhances analysis, and introduces new service possibilities. In environmental impact assessments, for example, AI helps consultants gather and interpret documentation faster, producing actionable insights and speeding up the reporting process. This shift is not only boosting internal productivity, it’s also helping clients make quicker, more informed decisions.

Digital solutions

Sweco is also making strong use of Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twins and other solutions. BIM fosters seamless collaboration between disciplines by enabling co-creation on a shared digital model. This improves communication, reduces errors, and increases design and delivery quality. Digital twins go further by simulating real-life conditions. They help teams anticipate maintenance needs, evaluate alternative scenarios, and optimise performance before any action is taken on-site. “These solutions are transforming how we deliver projects,” says Luka.

From concept to reality

Sweco’s digital innovations are already creating impact. A GEO portal developed in-house enables consultants to quickly locate spatial and project data, making it easier to explore case studies and plan effectively. Another real-world application is the integration of AI in documentation workflows. By analysing and summarising environmental data, AI tools help consultants produce draft reports faster, allowing them to focus on review and strategic recommendations.

People at the center of transformation

Sweco’s approach to digitalisation is not just about tools, it’s about people. Training, continuous learning, and an innovation-driven mindset are essential to keeping up with today’s rapid technology cycles. We want everyone to feel confident and capable in using new technologies, that means not only training on how tools work, but also fostering resilience, curiosity, and innovation.

A future-ready vision

Looking forward, Luka sees a clear path: connecting deep expertise with digital capabilities to deliver even greater value for clients. With AI, BIM, and other digital tools working together, Sweco Belgium is building an integrated ecosystem that supports both internal efficiency and client transformation.

Digitalisation is no longer optional. At Sweco, it’s a strategic enabler, turning complexity into clarity and helping to design the sustainable societies of tomorrow.

Sweco’s digital journey

Digitalisation at Sweco is more than technology, it’s a strategic approach that empowers people, strengthens processes, and delivers smarter, more sustainable outcomes.
