Sweco and De Lijn: together on the road to a sustainable, electric network

In the growing focus on climate, mobility plays a crucial role. In this context, the Flemish transport company De Lijn aims to make its heritage more sustainable and switch its entire bus fleet to electric driving. Sweco is happy to lend its expertise to this important climate transition.

Electrification of De Lijn: Sustainable depots by 2035

The depots are an essential link in the successful electrification of De Lijn. In recent years, the Flemish transport company has undertaken a comprehensive operation, where it is building new depots in phases and renovating existing ones. The goal is to offer emission-free services in urban areas by 2025 and to operate entirely emission-free by 2035. Sweco is committed to a sustainable and livable future for everyone and fully embraces these ambitions. In Belgium, Sweco has an impressive portfolio for developing and designing new depots. Examples include projects in Hasselt, Sint-Niklaas, Leuven, and more recently the project in Wissenhage for De Lijn. The development on the site in Haren for the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (MIVB) should certainly not be forgotten. Thus, we actively contribute to the electrification of many depots and the sustainability of our public transport.

With a new tender for depots within a framework agreement, De Lijn is taking further steps towards a sustainable fleet. Two providers have been selected to realize up to 17 depots over a period of six years in Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and traditional constructions. Again, this involves both new depots and the renovation of existing ones. As the best provider, Sweco may immediately start with the development of five depots in a PPP construction, in Asse, Anderlecht, Rumst, Leuven, and Mechelen. Sweco supports De Lijn with project management, technical expertise, and administration and impressed with a tailor-made plan of action, based on our extensive field experience. Our experts look forward to continuing to play an active role in the climate transition of De Lijn and thus further building sustainable mobility.
